Affirmations and a Higher Power
I see that some of the LGBT leaders I most respect have had little use for God, spirituality or religion.
I want to explain here how spirituality and a belief in a Higher Power are vital in my life. I will do this without demanding much initial faith on the part of the reader.
Most of use would agree with the following affirmations:
We are not alone or unique.
There is something good about being queer.
We are at our best when we are glad that we are queer.
We cannot change our sexual orientations, or sexual identities, and really shouldn’t try to.
Our sexual experiences have not all been immoral. Maybe none of them have been.
We should act intentionally, expressing our identities in the community.
What do the affirmations I have offered really mean? My dictionary gives the following definition of destiny: “The seemingly inevitable or necessary succession of events.” That is the starting point for a concept of a Higher Power, a benevolent loving creator.
It is most direct to summarize the affirmations by saying that I was created for a good purpose, and that I am at my best when I live out the lives that destiny, or God, prepared us for. More to the point, a belief in God, based on free choice, can help us to hold on to these assertions and live out our lives as more authentic, effective persons.
